GGT FAQ
What kinds of electric vehicles does GGT manufacture?
We have two main vehicle types - our urban electric vehicles (UEVs) and our electric retrofits. The urban electrics are cars, trucks, and vans optimized and built to be all-electric. Retrofits are existing gas-powered cars, trucks, and vans that we convert into emission-free, all-electric vehicles.
What is an "urban electric vehicle"?
Urban electrics fall under a federal classification of vehicles called Low-Speed Electric Vehicles (LEVs), which can be cars or trucks. They meet all federal safety requirements for a low speed vehicle and can be operated on streets with speed limits up to 35 mph. Urban electrics are based upon the micro car and truck technology that’s been proven on the streets of Europe for well over a decade.
How fast can it go?
GGT Urban electrics are approved to drive up to 25 miles per hour by the federal government. However, our Cozmo, for example, can reach a maximum speed of 45 mph, though it will be released initially as an Urban electric vehicle (25 mph max) or as a medium-speed vehicle where permitted (35 mph max). The UEVs can easily sustain such speeds for miles without any power fluctuation.
Where can I drive a GGT Urban Electric Vehicle?
GGT Urban electrics can be driven on public streets with posted speed limits of 35 mph or less. Certain restrictions apply from state to state, however. Check with your Secretary of State or Department of Motor Vehicles for the specific guidelines for your state. Or email us and we’ll be happy to check for you.
How safe are Urban Electric Vehicles?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Association has set strict standards for Urban and Low-Speed Electric Vehicles. The standards include a safety glass windshield, turn signals, brake lights and seat belts, among many other safety features. GGT Urban electrics meet ALL NHTSA standards, as well as FMVSS 500 standards.
Where can I drive GGT's Electric Retrofits?
There are no federal or state speed restrictions for electric retrofits, so you can drive them wherever you can drive any normal car, truck, or van.
How safe are Electric Retrofits?
How fast can they go?
The retrofits are as safe as the original cars they're based on. For example, a GGT retrofit Mini Cooper has the exact same safety features and safety rating as a standard Mini. And all retrofits are capable of highway speeds, ranging from 60 to 85+ mph.
What kind of batteries do GGT Urban Electrics and Electric Retrofits use?
Our electric motors are powered by six to twelve 12-volt led-gel sealed batteries forming a 72-volt system, with an auxiliary 12-volt battery to power options.
How far can I drive before recharging the batteries?
Our Urban electrics and retrofits can drive anywhere from 60 to 120+ miles on a single eight-hour charge. The distance and battery life depends on the model of car, your personal driving habits, and road conditions. Check out the individual product specs for our vehicles to see each car's specific battery range.
How do I recharge the batteries?
To recharge, simply plug the vehicle's conveniently stowed power cord into any standard 110 volt outlet and you're done. Just let it charge like any other household appliance.
How long does it take to recharge the batteries?
4 hour charge = 80% battery life
8 hour charge = 100% battery life
Do the batteries have to drain completely before I recharge?
No, you can plug in your Urban electric or retrofit vehicle whenever and wherever it’s convenient.
Are these hybrid vehicles?
No, GGT only manufactures all-electric vehicles, which use no gas, oil, or fossil fuels and produce no harmful emissions. Our vehicles require no trips to the gas station and no oil changes.
Are there special incentives or tax credits for owning an electric vehicle?
Yes, our Urban electrics and electric retrofits qualify for alternative fuel/electric vehicle federal tax credits, such as the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (EESA) Tax Credit, which can range from $2,500 to $7,500. Check with your tax advisor for specific details or click here to read the U.S. Department of Energy's rundown of State/Federal Incentives and Laws for Alternative Fuels and Advanced Vehicles.
